Letter: Protect Rock Creek as wilderness

I'm a Sheridan grandmother who wants to save wilderness for my grandchildren, their children, and all children in Wyoming who come after.

Sara Domek's perspective (Casper Star-Tribune, Forum/Oct. 30), "Wyoming's Wilderness: A reason to celebrate," was a beautiful commentary about the legacy of wilderness designation and reminded us to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Wyoming Wilderness Act. It's odd that no Wyoming wilderness lands have been added since that act was signed Oct. 30, 1984.

The Rock Creek area in our Big Horns is ripe for designation as a wilderness area. It is 34,000 acres (approximately the size of Denver International Airport). Rock Creek is filled with pristine pine and spruce forests that provide excellent habitat for elk and great elk hunting. It's becoming increasingly rare to find hiking and horseback trails that offer solitude and views of soaring granite spires.

Go to this Web site: http://www.wildwyo.org for more information on how to help. Wilderness designation can only be provided by an act of Congress. It's time for Wyomingites who care about Wyoming's special places to take action. Step up and write (fax is best) to our senators and representative. Rock Creek needs to be added to Cloud Peak Wilderness -- now!

I want to see this area saved for our grandchildren and theirs. Don't you?
