Groups join to lobby wilderness

Six conservation organizations have joined to form the Pennsylvania Wilderness Coalition. The new group will advocate for wilderness designation on the Allegheny National Forest the state's only National Forest.

Wilderness forum sparks controversy

A border security panel presentation against creating a wilderness area in southern Doña Ana County has not only raised the ire of sup­porters of the wilderness legislation in Con­gress, but also local civil rights groups.

The forum was held Tuesday, May 11, at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Mu­seum. Sponsoring the forum were the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce, Las Cru­ces Tea Party, People for Preserving Our West­ern Heritage, New Mexico Cattle Growers As­sociation and the New Mexico Federal Lands Council.

City Endorses Gold Butte NCA Designation

The Mesquite City Council followed the lead of the Clark County Commission during Tuesday's meeting, as they approved a proclamation which endorses the designation of the Gold Butte area as a National Conservation Area.

The controversial move means the City of Mesquite has officially gone on the record as supporting a plan to designate as much as 345,000 acres of land from Bunkerville to the Moapa Valley as a restricted area in which development will not be allowed and motorized vehicular traffic will be limited.

A push to preserve the San Gabriels

The river ripples cold around his waders as Bill Reeves casts a dry fly onto a pool edged with alders on the bottom of a canyon deep in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Reeves, 69, who first fished this stretch of the San Gabriel River's west fork with his father more than half a century ago, was in his element - scanning the eddies for rising wild trout in a wilderness that resurrected childhood memories.

Wilderness impact on border security debated

LAS CRUCES -- It was standing-room-only at a Tuesday lecture warning about cross-border crime and the impact of a bill proposing to designate thousands of acres in Doña Ana County as wilderness -- but there were plenty with an opposing view just outside the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum hall.

U.S. Sens. Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., have introduced Senate Bill 1689, which would create thousands of acres of federally designated wilderness in Do-a Ana County.

NORTH COUNTY - Descending a trail near Julian into the San Diego River gorge, a group of hikers marveled at the multicolored show of flowers along their path and the expanse of green everywhere below. They splashed through the San Diego River - no deeper than a creek - and relaxed for lunch under cottonwood trees as quails flew from the brush and a wild turkey trotted by.

Miner's Ridge added to Glacier Peak Wilderness

DARRINGTON, Wash. -- A land swap has added Miner's Ridge to the Glacier Peak Wilderness and the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

The 372-acre wilderness area was once the subject of a protest in the 1960s by U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. The outdoor enthusiast led a hike up a Miner's Ridge trail to protest a proposed copper mine. Plans for the mine were abandoned after copper prices dropped.

Feds focus on future of conservation areas in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Federal officials are beginning to decide how to manage more than 100,000 acres in southern Utah designated by Congress last year as important for  conserving plants and animals, including the threatened Mojave desert tortoise.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management said Monday it's developing plans for the  63,500-acre Beaver Dam Wash and the 45,000-acre Red Cliffs area.

Both are newly created national conservation areas, where the top priority is preserving  natural and cultural resources.

Hidden Gems debate revs to a higher level with public forums

This proposal was submitted by an environmental coalition to U.S. Rep. Jared Polis' office last month. The Congressman will gather information from the public over the next month to help create a Wilderness bill.The debate over the Hidden Gems Wilderness proposal is about to hit the big stage.

County commissioners recommend NCA status for Gold Butte

County commissioners took the lead Tuesday on supporting National Conservation Area with wilderness protection designation for Gold Butte.

The commission passed a resolution nearly identical to the one Mesquite City Council approved in October requesting NCA with wilderness protection for an area spread out over 354,000 acres.
