Members of the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forest and Public Lands heard testimony today on The Devil's Staircase Wilderness Act of 2009 (H.R. 2888). David Dreher, Washington Representative of the Campaign for America's Wilderness, said:
"We applaud the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands for hearing testimony today on The Devil's Staircase Wilderness Act of 2009. This marks a great step forward in protecting one of the most secluded and wild treasures in Oregon."
"The "staircase" of waterfalls with plunge pools carved into the sandstone is a spectacular site and well worth the effort it takes to reach its remote location. The area also contains some of the finest examples of classic old growth forest left in the Coast Range and is home to a great web of native species, including threatened spotted owls, elk, black bear, mountain lions, river otter and mink."
"We commend Representative DeFazio in his leadership to protect nearly 30,000 acres of this remarkable landscape as wilderness and more than 14 miles of wild and scenic river for Wassen and Franklin Creeks."
