Big Sur could get more land, protection under Farr bill
November 9th, 2009Plans to pay for the Big Sur portion of Los Padres National Forest separately, add more than 2,000 acres to the Ventana Wilderness and prevent dams on some local rivers are all part of legislation submitted to Congress on Friday.
Under the bill by Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, Congress would take a closer look at management of the federal portions of the Big Sur coast.
Funding Big Sur independently of the large Los Padres National Forest would allow for spending decisions to happen locally, supporters said.

Editorial: Tester bill creates jobs, protects forest
November 2nd, 2009Montana has waited for nearly 30 years for new wilderness with nothing yet to show for it. When the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act passed in March, not a single acre of the 2 million acres newly designated as wilderness was located in Montana.
Meanwhile, Montanans have watched as our timber industry has dwindled to a bare skeleton of what it used to be, and in recent years, the nationwide decline in housing construction that hastened the shuttering of several western Montana mills.
California Desert Protection Act Turns 15
October 30th, 2009Tomorrow is the 15-year anniversary of the California Desert Protection Act. The legislation protects 7.7 million acres of California desert and remains the largest wilderness and national park bill in the history of the lower 48 states. When President Bill Clinton signed the act, baby desert tortoises crawled on his desk to symbolize the protection being brought to the area.

Salazar Bill Will Provide Crucial Links between San Juans Wilderness Areas

The dual purpose of public school is not only to prepare our young for the workplace, but also to prepare them for citizenship. One way students in social studies classes can participate in active citizenship, for example, is by investigating their communities for a problem that can be solved by public policy, and then following a plan to have that policy passed.
